4 Great ways to keep your Dog Cool this Summer

As the weather is getting warmer day by day, it’s important to ensure you keep your dogs cool this summer. Dogs can die from heatstroke, but they won’t die from not having a walk. These are a few friendly tips of how to keep your dog cool.

Paddling pools-

This is a great idea to keep your pooches cool for the summer. It’s very refreshing for them, some dogs will just stand in the paddling pool to cool down their pads. Others will lay down to cool down their tummies. You don’t want to fill up your pool with freezing cold water as that can cause your dog to go into shock on a very hot day.

We have a paddling pool in the garden for our pups. Our newest addition Pol loves it the most. She spends most of her time in there on a hot day.

Keep them hydrated-

This should be an obvious tip but always keep them hydrated. Make sure they have cool fresh water, most defiantly when you’re taking them on a dog walk too.

Also if you have a water bowl down outside move it into the shade as it can get warm. you could also put ice cubes into the water bowl to keep it cool for your dog.

Dog walks-

When taking your dogs for a walk the best way to know if the pavement is too hot for your furry friends is; placing the back of your hand on the pavement, if it’s too hot for your hand then it’s too hot for dog’s paws.

Taking your dog for a walk midday on a summers day can be so dangerous, this can lead to their paws getting burnt, dehydration or sunstroke.

Knowing the signs of heatstroke is a very important thing, these are a few ways to check-

· Breathing distress

· Vomiting or diarrhoea

· Bright red tongue

· Drooling and panting increase

· Increase in heart rate

To prevent heatstroke-

· Do not leave your dog alone in the car while shopping

· Never leave your dog’s outside alone on a hot day

· While outside, ensure your dog had fresh water and shade

· Keep your house cool (open windows, doors, fan)

Cooling toys -

Cooling toys are a great idea! If you’re wondering what they are, you literally pop any toys your pooch plays with in the freezer. This will then keep your pup entertained while cooling themselves down at the same time.

Another great idea is ice cubes, it’s quick and easy. While you’re getting yourself a nice ice-cold refreshing drink, why not let your furry friend join you!

All you need to do is pop some ice cube in their water bowl or even pop a couple cubes on the floor to let the play and chew (yes you may have a little water on the floor from the melting ice, but it won’t hurt). If your dog doesn’t like that try putting their favorite treat into the ice cube. Some other frozen healthy alternatives are - carrots, apple slices, pear.

As we have 3 dogs ourselves we know it can be hard for dogs to stay cool, especially puppy’s as they struggle to regulate their body temperature in the heat. I hope these 4 great ways to keep your dog’s cool this summer helped. Please feel free to drop us a message on MNC dog consultancy Facebook/Instagram or 07956654474 07765521703.
